KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - In Hangar AE, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the end of the Boeing Delta fairing is covered to keep the inside clean. The fairing will encapsulate the Swift spacecraft. Swift is a first-of-its-kind, multi-wavelength observatory dedicated to the study of gamma-ray burst (GRB) science. Its three instruments will work together to observe GRBs and afterglows in the gamma-ray, X-ray and optical wavebands. Here they are looking at the Experiment Logistics Module - Exposed Section, or ELM-ES, berthing mechanism, including the longeron trunnion/scuff plate, Payload Disconnect Assembly and WIF socket. The mission payload also includes the Extended Facility and the Inter Orbit Communication System Extended Facility, or ICS-EF. Equipment familiarization is part of a Crew Equipment Interface Test. The payload will be launched to the International Space Station aboard the space shuttle Endeavour on the STS-127 mission, targeted for launch on May 15, 2009.
