Bolm began his career as a dancer with the Mariinsky Ballet in St Petersburg, Russia, where he worked with some of the greatest choreographers of his time, including Michel Fokine and Marius Petipa. He later danced with the Ballets Russes in Paris, where he became a principal dancer and choreographer. In 1917, Bolm moved to the United States and founded his own dance company, the Adolph Bolm Ballet, which performed in New York and other cities around the country. He also choreographed for the Metropolitan Opera and the Hollywood film industry. Bolm was known for his innovative choreography, which combined classical ballet technique with modern dance movements. He was also a pioneer in the use of lighting and set design to enhance the visual impact of his performances. Throughout his career, Bolm was recognised as one of the most influential figures in the world of dance. He received numerous awards and honours for his contributions to the art form, including the National Medal of Arts in 1986, which was awarded posthumously.
