Girolamo Campagna was an Italian sculptor born in Verona in 1549. He was one of the most important sculptors of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods, and his work can be found in many churches and public spaces throughout Italy. Campagna began his career as an apprentice to the sculptor Michele Sanmicheli and quickly gained a reputation for his skill and talent. He worked on many important projects throughout his career, including the decoration of the Doge's Palace in Venice and St Mark's Cathedral in Venice. One of Campagna's most famous works is his statue of St Sebastian, which is located in the church of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. Considered one of the finest examples of Baroque sculpture in Italy, the statue is admired for its dynamic composition and emotional intensity. Campagna died in Venice in 1625, but his legacy lives on through his many works of art. His sculptures continue to be admired for their beauty, craftsmanship and technical skill, and serve as a testament to his enduring influence on the art world.
