Summary

Čeština: Jan Honsa Meandrující říčka (Litavka)

Unlike most of his generation, as the son of a farmer from Bestovice-u-Hokne, he was a true countryman among them, and his close connection to the land predisposed him to landscape painting, whose impressionistic impulse was less concerned with the beauty of nature as understood by his urban classmates, but rather with manifestations of the life force of nature itself. Hons's distinctive style, easily recognizable and utterly unique in a broader than Czech context, is an original blend of European Impressionism and Czech rural Art Nouveau, that crowded Rococo style that was one of the few artistic sources of inspiration for rural people in the second half of the 19th century in the form of color prints and pictures from village pilgrimages. Jan Hons did not receive much recognition in this area during his lifetime, as his work after 1912 did not reflect much of the contemporary trends. From today's point of view, however, this work is much more original and closer to the Czech artistic tradition than the imitative formal conquests of the time.
