Interior of First Parish Church - Charleston, Boston Mass.
Summary
Interior of First Parish Church. This building was the one erected in 1834 and lasted until after the congregation had united with the Winthrop Church in 1912. The building was torn down in 1934. It had seated some 600. The Harris Chime of 16 bells was given by Miss Charlotte Harris, who died in 1877. The largest weighed 3,267 pounds, and they were built at a cost of $8,000 in 1868. Directions were that they be rung on Sundays, national holidays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year's Eve, and on the day, Nov. 12, that marked the founding of the Parish. The list of ministers from 1632 to 1782 gives nine whose ministry in Charlestown continued until their death, and whose remains were interred in the local cemetery. One had served 37 years, two others 43 years each, and one rounded out 50 years.
