Howard Coster (1885-1959) was a British photographer known for his portraits of notable people, particularly in the fields of art, culture and politics. He was born on 7 June 1885 in Yorkshire, England. Coster gained recognition for his work in the early to mid 20th century. Coster set up his photographic studio in London's West End in 1927 and quickly became a sought-after portrait photographer. His subjects included prominent figures such as writers, actors, musicians, scientists and politicians. Coster was known for capturing his subjects' personalities in a distinctive and often informal style. His portraits are characterised by a focus on the individual, often using dramatic lighting and a keen attention to detail. Coster's work is considered important in documenting the cultural and intellectual life of the time, providing a visual record of key figures. Howard Coster's career spanned several decades and he continued to work until his death on 17 November 1959. His photographs are held in various collections and his legacy lives on through the continued appreciation of his contributions to the art of portraiture.
