Henry Powers Drugstore Ontonagon
Summary
In 1884, Henry Powers partnered with Dr. H.E. Cary to open a drugstore in Ontonagon. By 1887, Powers was the sole proprietor. Powers also served as editor of the Ontonagon Herald for 14 years. After the Ontonagon fire of 1896, he rebuilt. His new store stood on the 600 block of River Street. (left)
By 1908 another building had been built just southeast of the drugstore. This two-story frame structure, pictured with a Victrola sign, was divided into two storefronts. Among other businesses, the store was home to a jeweler and a milliner. For a time, the second story housed the offices of Dr. E.J. Evans. Both of these main street buildings were demolished in the early 1990s to make room for the new Citgo Station Store, now operated by Krist Oil. They're #MissingintheCopperCountry.
