Henry Arnold Martens interview conducted by Clark Douglas Halker, 2011-07-26

description

Summary

Two interviews were done with Henry "Bud" Martens. Both were recorded on July 26, 2011. Part 1 (38:39) is longer and more general and concerns his upbringing, early iron worker career, welding, the trade, and safety. Part 2 (07:44) is very brief and devoted to reviewing the companies he worked for over many years. Marten had given me a piece of paper with the chronology of his employers and some photos. I asked him questions related those company and work site photos.
The Local IWU 63 headquarters can be a bit noisy and this can be heard in the background. It's a big industrial building, so the cooling and heating system is a regular problem. Occasionally, the building generates a line noise that is impossible to keep off the recording. NOTE: Photograph #15 was taken of Henry "Bud" Martens at IWU Local #63 Headquarters in Broadview, IL. Photographs #1-14 belonged to Martens. These photographs were scanned or photographed on site. For that reason, the quality of the photographs in this interview varies.
Recorded at the Iron Workers Union Local #63 Headquarters, Broadview, Illinois, July 26, 2011.
