description

Summary

Significance: This building, together with the adjacent building (Lillibridge House No. 1, HABS-GA-1185) are structures unique in Savannah in that the gambrel roof is essentially a New England form. The building occupies a site in what was formally the Eastcommon of Savannah, which was laid out in building lots by an ordinance of Sept. 28, 1790. The two Lillibridge Houses occupy lot 15 of Warren Ward. Hampton Lillibridge, well-to-do planter, originally from Newport, Rhode Island, bought the vacant lot March 1, 1796. He built both houses soon thereafter. His will, signed August 28, 1797, mentions the houses. He left his wife Anne the western half of the lot...The eastern half of the lot was left to his daughter Henrietta.
