Title: EXECUTION OF AN ARAB CHIEF AT MELINDA, BRITISH EAST AFRICA

Original caption: 'The Arab chief Ali-Bin-Saif was sentenced to death for the murder of Mr. Bell Smith, the Superintendent of the British East Africa Company. Mr Smith had had some disagreement with the chief, and about 10.30 pm two days later was shot by the man while smoking in his verandah. The murderer was tried at Mombasa and brought back to Melinda to be executed. A guard of Marines was landed from H.M.S. Swallow, and the execution was duly carried out. The prisoner behaved with great courage, and died immediately on the volley being fired.'
