Summary

High Street, Grantham, Lincolnshire, 1913 or before, looking north. The 17th-century stone building with tile-roofed gable end facing the street on the left, next to the gas lamp, is the Horse and Jockey public house, now demolished. Access was at the side, along Horse and Jockey Yard, where there were cottages, also demolished, these contemporary to the pub. Before the buildings on the left and all development to the south on St Peter's Hill, the public house was the southern 'entrance' to Grantham on the Great North Road. and sat square to the northern edge of St Peter's Hill common waste ground. The waste ground separated Grantham from the village of Spittlegate to the south, which began at the now Wharf Road.
