On 23 July 1925, Sydney hosted eight of the US Navy Battle Fleet's largest ships. On 28 July, Governor Dudley de Chair and Lady Enid de Chair hosted the Vice-Regal Garden Party in their honour at Government House grounds in the Royal Botanic Gardens. The Governor and his wife are pictured here (centre) greeting a high ranking United States naval officer, possibly Captain Hart of USS MISSISSIPPI. To the far right is their daughter, Elaine de Chair. Other guests of honour were United States Admiral Samuel Shelburne Robison and his wife...Over 3,000 people reportedly attended the party, which was a casual event with no formal reception and tennis games for the younger attendees. One United States naval officer spoke at the ceremony, exclaiming:..'"It's just wonderful - the view, the crowd, and the weather. One could get nothing better in the world..Not even in California."'.The Sydney Morning Herald, 29 July 1925, p. 13..This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century. ..The ANMM undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection.
