Gootenberg House, 10805 Clermont Avenue, Garrett Park, Montgomery County, MD
Summary
2000 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry
Significance: The Gootenberg Residence, built in October, 1960, is a pre-fabricated panel building, organized on a construction module of eight and ten feet. It is one of a number of Tech Built houses constructed in Garrett Park. Roy Gootenberg selected house design "EX," with an elongated kitchen and the addition of a service island, and several other plan modifications. The Gootenbergs raised their family in the house, and continue to live there, having made minor modifications to it over the years. The Tech Built sales brochure described the house thus: "Conceived and executed by the internationally famous architectural firm of Carl Koch and Associates, Tech Built's clean, contemporary design has been honored by more awards than any house today. The unique post and beam construction affords a truly flexible home for lifetime living. Large glass expanses provide bright sunlit rooms and enlarge the already spacious living areas by bringing in the whole outdoors. It has the long, low silhouette of a one story house but all the advantages of the modern two-level house. The Tech Built house offers a quality, coherence and freshness of design that make it a house for our time."
