Giotto di Bondone (c. 1267 - 8 January 1337) was an Italian painter and architect from Florence, often referred to simply as Giotto. He is considered one of the most important artists of the early Renaissance and is credited with revolutionising the art of painting by introducing a more naturalistic approach to representation. Giotto's works include frescoes in the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi, the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua and the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence. His paintings are characterised by their emotional intensity, dramatic use of light and shadow, and a focus on human figures that are more lifelike than those of earlier artists. In addition to painting, Giotto was an accomplished architect and designed the famous bell tower of Florence Cathedral, known as Giotto's Campanile. Giotto's influence on the development of Western art cannot be overestimated. His innovations in painting paved the way for the Renaissance, and his legacy can be seen in the work of countless artists who followed in his footsteps.
