The area to which this paper relates is represented on the Olivetand Parker sheets of the Topographic Atlas of the United States, pub-lished by the United States Geological Survey/ It occupies largeportions of Turner and Hutchinson counties, and small portionsof Bonhomme, Yankton, and Clsij counties, South Dakota. It isespecialty instructive from the fact that it includes typical areas ofthe valleys of James and Vermilion rivers, and Turkey Ridge, whichforms a portion of the divide between the two streams. More-over, it exhibits characteristic features of two kinds of artesian sup-ply, viz, that from the Dakota sandstone, and that from the sandsunderlying the drift.
