General Cyrus French House, Kingstown Road (State Route 138) & College Road, Kingston, Washington County, RI

description

Summary

Significance: At the time of the HABS documentation (1940), the two and one-half story, clapboard and shingled house was in very poor condition and unoccupied. There was a fire the following year.

The Federal Writers' Project described this building as "dilapidated." It was said to have been "constructed about 1792 from three older structures when General Cyrus
French came to [town]. French purchased the
land from two sons of Robert Potter. The central part of the house, built about 1740, is probably the building mentioned in the deed as then standing on the land. A barn and a shoemaker shop were also specified in the deed. Part of the house is supposed to contain timber from the old jail, built about 1756, which was also
purchased by French."
