Petty Officer Dooner and the Navy team took first and third place against the Hawaii-based U.S. Army, Air Force and Marine Corps teams. The marathon also hosted 24 area high schools that competed in a separate race. Both the military teams and the high school teams designed self-built electric vehicles around identical one-horsepower electric engines provided by Hawaiian Electric Company.
