Fifteen teams search for hidden explosives at the mine
Summary
Fifteen teams search for hidden explosives at the mine detection event at 2014 Sapper Stakes, Fort McCoy, Wis., May 6, 2014. Sapper Stakes is the first time the 412th and 416th Theater Engineer Commands have come together to give this event. At the mine detection event, teams must calibrate and test fielded equipment before searching for hidden mines along a preselected route. Teams must field an AN-PSS-12 metal detector searching for and marking unusual indicators. Poker chips were used as visual markers because they’re nonmetallic and stand out against the natural terrain. A soldier must then low crawl, forward probing using a non-metallic rod to decide if the object is a false positive or a antitank or antipersonnel mine. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Roger Ashley)
