Family Life at Pavia House in Zeist

description

Summary

These photographs reveal Pauw van Wieldrecht’s development from amateur to exceptionally talented photographer. His key subjects were family and domestic life in and around the family homes, travels, outings, and hunting. We see the photographer’s nephew Reinier (1897), brother Maarten defending himself from a charging (stuffed) wild boar (May 1898) and the domestic staff (August 1897).

Jonkheer Henry Pauw van Wieldrecht was born in 1863 on the country estate of Pavia (Zeist). His father, Matthieu Christiaan Hendrik knight Pauw van Wieldrecht, was at the time of Henry's birth chamberlain of King William III in special service, after having previously been a diplomat. Henry came from a wealthy and noble family. Almost nothing is known about Henry Pauw van Wieldrecht, apart from the summary information that can be found in the Netherlands' Adelsboek (the 'red books') and in the book by Agnies Pauw van Wieldrecht. The photos that Henry took are therefore the most important source of knowledge about (the interpretation of) his life; they portray his activities, home, family, relatives, and acquaintances.
