Summary

The Square had been named as Taşhan Square, National Sovereignty Square, Public Square and finally Ulus Square. Starting from the Ulus Square, the Republic Boulevard reaches to Ankara Railway Station. .The Victory Monument located in the Square was constructed with the money collected through a campaign initiated by the journal named Yenigün (New Day) published by Yunus Nadi in Ankara. The project of the Austrian artist Heinrich Krippel was selected as the top project in the international contest and casted in Austria. It was located before Taşhan with a ceremony held on 24 November, 1927...The Victory Monument was a parade area. Various demonstrations were held there. Public stands were set up there. Primary school students used to gather around the Monument on the Children's Week. ...Ulus Meydanı'nda Zafer Anıtın'ndan Ankara Garı'na Cumhuriyet Bulvarı, 1937..Meydan; Taşhan Meydanı, Hakimiyeti Milliye Meydanı, Millet Meydanı, Ulus Meydanı adları üzerinden bugüne geliyor. Ulus Meydanı’ndan başlayarak Cumhuriyet Bulvarı, Ankara Garı’na ulaşıyor. .Meydanı süsleyen Zafer Anıtı, Yunus Nadi’nin Ankara’da yayımlanan Yenigün gazetesinin başlattığı kampanya sonunda toplanan parayla yaptırıldı. Uluslararası düzeyde düzenlenen yarışmada Avusturyalı sanatçı Heinrich Krippel’in projesi birinci seçildi. Avusturya’da döküldü. 24 Kasım 1927’de bir törenle Taşhan’ın önüne konuldu. ..Zafer Anıtı bir tören yeriydi. Mitingler yapılırdı. Halk kürsüsü kurulurdu. Çocuk Haftası’nda ilkokul çocukları anıt önünde toplanırlardı. .1950’lerde meydanın genişletilmesi sırasında yerinden kaydırıldı ve bugünkü yerine taşındı.

A collection is reflecting the urbanisation processes of Ankara, a capital of Republic of Turkey, between 1930-1960 through the eyes of photographers whose works took place in the archive of Directorate General of Press and Information. Within the framework of this archive, we have collected photos starting from the Ankara Railway Station, followed by various boulevards which finally arrive at Çankaya.
