Escorts follow the aircraft carrier USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV-67) during operations with Carrier Battle Group Eight off the coast of Lebanon. They are the frigate USS W. S. SIMS (FF-1059) and the guided missile destroyer USS RICHARD E. BYRD (DDG-23)

The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
