HAMILTON [& S]ons / [ST]REET / [?]WN, / BRISTOL. / ENLARGERS TO THE / PROFESSION. / All Oil and Water Colouring done by / Mr. H. personally.; torn paper glued from center to bottom of verso has some black printing on it: [?]ceptors. / 1849.); and some handwritten text (in black ink) Redfern / famous Liverpool / flautist / (in pencil) from Hessey.
Provenance: Mr. J. L. Hessey, Wallasey, Cheshire, England, 24 June 1935.
Condition: Photograph has a horizontal tear, about 1 1/2 inches, at right edge above center. It extends across the top of the flute, but does not affect sitter. It is not an open tear, but is still attached to the card which appears creased on the verso. There are two pin holes, one each at top and bottom center of the card. There is some surface dirt, mostly on the upper half of the photograph. There is a small paper adhesion or loss(?) at lower left edge of photogrpah, on bottom edge of desk.

The Dayton C. Miller collection in the Library of Congress, contains nearly 1,700 flutes and other wind instruments, statuary, iconography, books, music, trade catalogs, tutors, patents, and other materials mostly related to the flute. It includes both Western and non-Western examples of flutes from around the world, with at least 460 European and American instrument makers represented. Items in the collection date from the 16th to the 20th century.
