Significance: This rambling vernacular house was built along the Rockfish River by Edward Coles (1786-1868), the second Governor of Illinois from 1822-1826. He was the son of John Coles II of Enniscorthy in Ablemarle County. The initial 1-1/2 story, "V" notched log dwelling was expanded in stages, much of which predates 1820.
