description

Summary

Green Summer (watercolour or gouache on paper, 1864). The models include Jane Morris (center, holding a peacock feather) and Georgiana Burne-Jones (second from right, reading a book. A version in oils was completed in 1868.

Edward Burne-Jones (1833–1898) was an one of the leading painters and designers of late 19th-century England, whose romantic paintings using medieval imagery were among the last manifestations of the Pre-Raphaelite style. More long-lasting is his influence as a pioneer of the revival of the ideal of the “artist-craftsman,” so influential to the development of 20th-century industrial design.
