description

Summary

Significance: According to the National Register nomination, this structure "... is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places under criterion A for its use as the headquarters and engineering facility for the 4146th Army Air Force Base Unit from 1944 to 1946. The 4146th Base Unit was the Army Air Force unit that developed the first successful, combat-proven air-launched rocket in the United States Armed Forces." The nomination goes on to say that "While some of the activities associated with the design and testing of air-launched rockets might have taken place on the adjacent hardstand, the majority of the fitting work was done inside of the hangar." In sum, Hangar 1301 (and its attached power plant and shops building) is significant as the location where the fitting or mounting of rocket launchers onto fighter airplanes, specifically the P-47, was refined (over an approximately two year period) to assure that the rockets could be successfully fired from the aircraft.
