Summary

DCM records the history of this flute in his ledger as told to him by Mr. W. C. McQuillen of Los Angeles on a visit 27 Oct. 1929: "Mr. McQuillen bought this flute from Max Lausberg of Los Angeles in Dec. 1883.... The flute probably came from Sherman & Clay. It was used by Mr. McQuillen for 10 to 12 years, in theaters, 'earning many dollars when I needed them.' ... Mr. McQuillen sold flute to Chas. J. Ellis of Los Angeles...after Ellis's death his daughter disposed of it to Baxter-Northup...till sold to D.C.M. in 1929."
Instrument type: Flute in C
Medium: Rosewood(?), silver-plated nickel silver for all metal parts. Metal-lined sockets with inner tuning slide in head joint socket. Ebonite at embouchure.; 66.4 cm.
Key Holes System: Boehm system, closed G#, alternate low C# lever for left little finger. Roller for C.
Mark Maximum: (5-pointed star) / MEDAILLE D'OR / PARIS 1878 / (crest with lion of Brabant?) / C. / MAHILLON / BRUXELLES / (5-pointed star)
Mark Additional: Mark on head. Mark on upper: (5-pointed star) / C. MAHILLON / BRUXELLES / (5-pointed star). Mark on foot: (5-pointed star) / C. MAHILLON / BRUXELLES / (5-pointed star). With crutch.
Condition: Both sockets previously cracked, commercially repaired with wide nickel silver ferrules. Crack at socket, upper joint, to first trill key. DCM ledger: "Meindl put on the wide silver bands on head and foot, and also removed the rods and levers for operating the low C# key...original oval embouchure was made rectangular and lined with silver by Geo. W. Haynes, and later the present rubber bushing was put in."
Provenance: Baxter-Northup Co., Los Angeles, 27 Aug.1929, obtained from the daughter of Charles J. Ellis, Los Angeles, a former owner of this flute. Also, formerly owned by Walter C. McQuillen and Max Lausberg, both of Los Angeles.

Miller collection in the Library of Congress, contains nearly 1,700 flutes and other wind instruments, statuary, iconography, books, music, trade catalogs, tutors, patents, and other materials mostly related to the flute. It includes both Western and non-Western examples of flutes from around the world, with at least 460 European and American instrument makers represented. Items in the collection date from the 16th to the 20th century.
