The Egerton Manuscript Collection is named after its founder, Sir Thomas Egerton (1540-1617), 1st Viscount Brackley, was a lawyer, statesman, and patron of the arts during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I of England. He served as Lord Keeper of the Great Seal and later as Lord Chancellor of England, holding high positions in the legal and political realms.

Sir Thomas Egerton acquired a substantial number of historical and literary manuscripts. In 1617, shortly before his death, Sir Thomas Egerton bequeathed his collection of manuscripts to the British Museum, which was the precursor to the British Library.

Egerton Master was a 15th century English illuminator known for his work on several illuminated manuscripts. He is believed to have been active between 1405 and 1420, and his works are characterised by their intricate designs and vibrant colours. One of Egerton Master's most famous works is the Egerton Gospel Book, which is now housed in the British Library. This illuminated manuscript contains the four Gospels of the New Testament and is renowned for its beautiful illustrations and ornate borders. Another notable work by Egerton Master is the Wollaton Antiphonal, also held in the British Library. This manuscript contains the music and prayers used during medieval services and is notable for its large size and intricate designs. Overall, the Egerton Master was an important figure in the world of medieval illumination, and his works continue to be admired and studied by scholars and art lovers today.
