Cpl. Joel Guerra, attached to the 11th Marine Expeditionary
Summary
Cpl. Joel Guerra, attached to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), leaps over a fellow Marine during a Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) seminar held on the flight deck of amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa (LHA1). MCMAP is a combat system developed in 2001 that combines existing and new hand-to-hand and close quarters combat (CQC) techniques with morale and team-building functions and instruction in what the Marine Corps calls the "Warrior Ethos." The 11th MEU is currently conducting operations aboard Tarawa in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations. Maritime Security Operations (MSO) help set the conditions for security in the maritime environment. From security, arises stability that results in global economic prosperity. MSO complements the counterterrorism and security efforts of regional nations and seek to disrupt use of the maritime environment by violent extremists as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material.
