Constant Permeke was a Belgian painter and sculptor who was born on 31 July 1886 in Antwerp, Belgium, and died on 4 January 1952 in Ostend, Belgium. He is considered one of the most important figures of Belgian Expressionism. Permeke studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, where he was influenced by Flemish Primitives and the works of Vincent van Gogh. He later moved to Ostend, where he became part of a group of artists known as 'Les XX'. Permeke's work is characterised by his use of bold colours and thick brushstrokes. His paintings often depict rural landscapes and figures, especially fishermen and farmers. He also created sculptures, often inspired by his paintings. Permeke's most famous works include 'The Plough' (1927), 'The Harvest' (1928) and 'The Fishermen' (1931). His work has been exhibited in major museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
