Summary

It makes sense that someone in Nome tried to make use of the strong winds which blow in from the Bering Sea. C.O. Peterson rigged up a sail to carry him across the ice on skis. This photo was taken in April 1906 by Seattle photographer Frank Nowell. Nowell spent several years in Nome during the gold rush.
