Summary

See also HALS MD-12 for related documentation.
Significance: Built ca. 1851, the Clifton House is representative of a rural house type which was common among the substantial farmers in Frederick County and the surrounding region during the first two thirds of the nineteenth century. The Battle of Monocacy was fought on the Clifton Farm and neighboring farms on July 9, 1864. Though the Confederacy won a nominal victory, Union commander Lew Wallace succeeded in delaying Confederate Jubal A. Early long enough to prevent the latter's seizure of Washington.
