description

Summary

Exact date unknown. Benjamin Butler was a fierce and unrelenting critic of President Johnson, who had taken office following the death of Abraham Lincoln. Chief among the 'high crimes and misdemeanors' cited in his impeachment was his replacement of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton with General Ulysses S. Grant, an act that was throught to violate the recently passed (and politically-motivated) Tenure of Office Act. Butler himself wrote the 10th article of impeachment, charging Johnson with making three speeches with an intent of showing disrespect for Congress. Image courtesy of Library of Congress.

Since his death in 1865, Abraham Lincoln has been an iconic American figure depicted in a wide range of media forms including printed materials, sculpture, alternative timelines, animation, documentaries, small cameos, and many fictionalized interpretations. Lincoln's unique physical appearance, including his tall and lanky stature and his distinctive beard, made him a popular subject for portrait artists. Over time, the abundance of portraits of Lincoln has contributed to his iconic status and has helped to ensure that his memory and legacy are preserved.
