description

Summary

Significance: In May 1887 a special election was held to decide the issue of building a new city hall and opera house. The issue passed on a vote of 98 to 22. The building, which required three years to complete, was designed by Bryan S. Vreeland, architect. Before completion, changes were made by architect George Hancock. Both men were local residents. The local paper reported, April 10, 1890, that the three story building nearing completion would cost over $35,000. Believed to be the finest opera house between St. Paul and Portland, it opened with a concert by the Queen City Band. Proceeds financed scenery and curtains for the stage. A grand opening was held on October 13, 1890 with the presentation of the Mendelssohn Quintet of Boston. It was planned from the beginning to house necessary city offices, jail and fire hall as well as the opera house. Movies ended the activities of the opera house but the building has accommodated city offices, jail and fire hall to this day. The condemned structure will be replaced by a new city hall, jail and fire hall building now under construction.
