Arthur Henri Poole - Choice Old Port
Summary
We've previously uploaded two photos of H. Downes & Co, Waterford. That establishment is still up and running and are here on Flickr as Downes Bar ( 74482219@N05/ ) . They're keen to see more pics of Downes from back in the day, so hoping the rest of you won't mind if we revisit 10 Thomas Street.....So this is the cellar at H. Downes with staff working away. The barrels, one of which is being tapped(?), were filled with Choice Old Port, Fined, 12 August 1936. Not entirely sure what process fining was, but I'm sure some of you know. We haven't an exact date for this photo, but it must have been taken at the same time as the other two on 27 October ( nlireland/6285806012/ ) and 31 October, 1936 ( nlireland/6298735118/ ) respectively. Most of you are aware of how easily led I am, so if enough of you vote for one date or the other, I'm game to go out on a limb and go with that date.....Think that the woman in the background has a plaster on her thumb. Love that such tiny details are evident in our photos! And does that mean that Elastoplast style sticking plasters were around in 1936?..Date: October 1936..NLI Ref.: P_WP_4159 ( P_WP_4159 )
