description

Summary

Significance: The Oil House at the Cape Hatteras Light Station was constructed in 1892 (at the same time as the addition to the nearby Double Keeper's Quarters) in order to store oil for the adjacent Lighthouse. Rectangular in plan, it was built of load-bearing brick masonry construction, with wood framing used to support the roof. Originally windowless, three windows were inserted at some point in the 1930s. The Lighthouse was electrified in 1934, with the Oil House converted to an electrical generating station. The building's original metal door was removed by 1946. As of 2016, the Oil House served as storage and a visitor contact station for Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
