Summary

Significance: This facility is one of four PAVE (Air Force program name) Phased Array Warning System (PAVE PAWS) sites located in the U.S. It was designed to provide early warning and tracking for submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs). It was the first ground-based SLBM detection and tracking unit to be deployed by the U.S. It was designed to provide sufficient warning time to sustain a credible second strike deterrent and counter the Soviet threat of forward deployment of ballistic missiles patrolling the coasts of North America.
