Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933) was a Scottish painter known for his depictions of Japanese and Chinese subjects. He was born in Broughton, Scotland, and studied at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh. In 1889 he travelled to Japan with his friend George Henry, where he became interested in Japanese art and culture. Hornel's style was strongly influenced by the Japanese woodblock prints he saw on his travels. He often painted figures in traditional Japanese dress, using bright colours and bold patterns. He also incorporated elements of Chinese art into his work, such as calligraphy and landscape motifs. In addition to painting, Hornel was also a photographer and a collector of Japanese art and artefacts. He was a member of the Glasgow School, a group of artists influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement who sought to create a distinctive Scottish style of art. Hornel's work is in many public collections, including the National Galleries of Scotland, the Tate Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
