Bonhomme Presbyterian Church, White & Conway Roads, Chesterfield, St. Louis County, MO
Summary
Significance: A bronze tablet placed near the west corner of the south facade states that this church was "erected about 1840." However, the actual construction of the two-story stone meeting house during 1841 was explicitly documented in the diary of one of the elders, Thomas Keyes Humphries. The congregation had been organized in October 1816 as the second Presbyterian church west of the Mississippi. Services were held in private houses and school houses until this chapel was built...The rubble stone walls have settled, causing sever cracks and warping, inside and out. The wood stairs and gallery are unsafe. Although the lawn and cemetery are well cared for, the lofty old church is kept locked against vandals while it awaits the promised restoration as an authentic pioneer landmark.
