Blair House, Harrison Street, Scottsville, Albemarle County, Virginia
Summary
1993 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry
Significance: Set atop one of Scottsville's highest gradients, the Blair (Tipton) House plainly characterizes the style most prevalent in vernacular architecture during the early to mid-nineteenth century. Built ca. 1842-1844 for William Adams, this two-story, single-pile brick edifice constructed over a raised cellar was host to members of one of Scottsville's most prominent families, the Blair's, from 1875 to 1927. The Blair (Tipton) House is an antiquated representative of the practical, resourceful, and frugal architecture of early Scottsville.
