This is an attempt to see World War 2 through the eyes of people who lived or fought on the territories controlled by the Axis powers, originally the Rome–Berlin Axis. Axis' principal members in Europe were Nazi Germany, the Kingdom of Italy, Hungary, and Spain. During World War II, Nazi Germany and Axis powers occupied or controlled a number of countries in Europe and beyond. At its zenith in 1942, the Axis presided over large parts of Europe, North Africa, and East Asia, either through occupation, annexation, or puppet states. The collection is made with an image recognition aid, so a small percentage of images may be wrongly attributed as European & 1939-1945. Here is a list of some of the countries that were occupied or allied with Nazi Germany during the war: Austria: Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938, after the Anschluss, which was the union of Austria and Germany. Czechoslovakia: Nazi Germany occupied the western and southern regions of Czechoslovakia in 1938, after the Munich Agreement. The rest of the country was occupied in 1939, after the invasion of Poland. Denmark: Nazi Germany occupied Denmark in 1940, after the invasion of Norway. France: Nazi Germany occupied France in 1940, after the fall of Paris. The French government set up a collaborationist regime in the unoccupied zone of Vichy. Greece: Nazi Germany invaded and occupied Greece in 1941, after the fall of Crete. Italy: Italy was an ally of Nazi Germany during World War II, but was also occupied by German forces after the fall of Mussolini in 1943. Netherlands: Nazi Germany occupied the Netherlands in 1940, after the invasion of Belgium. Norway: Nazi Germany invaded and occupied Norway in 1940. Poland: Nazi Germany invaded and occupied Poland in 1939, at the start of World War II. Belgium: Nazi Germany occupied Belgium in 1940, after the invasion of the Netherlands. Luxembourg: Nazi Germany occupied Luxembourg in 1940, after the invasion of Belgium. Ukraine: Nazi Germany occupied parts of Ukraine during World War II, after the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Belarus: Nazi Germany occupied Belarus during World War II, after the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Russia: Nazi Germany invaded and occupied parts of the Soviet Union during World War II, after the invasion in 1941. Yugoslavia: Nazi Germany occupied parts of Yugoslavia during World War II, after the invasion in 1941. Albania: Nazi Germany occupied Albania in 1943, after the fall of Mussolini. Hungary: Hungary was an ally of Nazi Germany during World War II, but was also occupied by German forces after the fall of the Hungarian government in 1944. Romania: Romania was an ally of Nazi Germany during World War II, but was also occupied by German forces after the fall of the Romanian government in 1944. Bulgaria: Bulgaria was an ally of Nazi Germany during World War II, but was also occupied by German forces after the fall of the Bulgarian government in 1944. Finland: Finland was an ally of Nazi Germany during World War II, but was not occupied by German forces.

Avegoor was a training camp for the Dutch SS and other Dutch nazi organizations. Located near the village of Ellecom, about 20 km northeast of the city of Arnhem. In September 1940 the then Troelstra holiday resort Avegoor was claimed by the Germans. In May 1941 the Dutch SS established a training camp under the name SS-Schule Avegoor. From May 1941 the volunteers for the Dutch SS were trained in the Nazi ideology and had a short military training. Although the training center was meant for the Dutch SS, it was under the supervision of the German SS and commander German SS-officer Alphons Brendel. A lot of the so-called Jew Hunters received part of their training at Avegoor. They worked for divisions of the Dutch police that specialized in finding and arresting Jews that were in hiding. In 1942 Jewish prisoners were brought to the camp for leveling the grounds for the gym to be built. Jewish men are imprisoned in the nearby villa called Irene. The name of the villa is changed by the Germans to Palestina and the prisoners have to sleep, side by side, head to toe, in a cramped space in the attic of the villa, which is infested by fleas. Each day they have to walk to the Avegoor estate with their heads bowed, looking down and no one else is allowed on the streets and the villagers have to keep their curtains closed. The Jewish prisoners are also used by the Dutch SS trainees as training material. They are beaten down with clubs and whips. Sometimes they are used as sparring partners by a German professional boxer. Eyewitnesses: “Suddenly they were there, a large group of bold-shaved men with wooden clogs and in strange-looking long coats with the Star of David on their chests. Screaming soldiers surrounding them.” “The road was cleared and the soldiers forced everybody to go into their houses when the prisoners passed in the morning and evening. Anyone, of the prisoners, who was too slow was beaten to get them to speed up.” “Between empty boxes at the greengrocer Brinkhorst in front of the door, I saw them trudging past. Old men with their heads bowed. It was a terrible sight. But far worse were the guards. They shouted. I could not understand. But they shouted. They shouted at those people. Those guards had thick heads with a helmet around it. And a rifle with a bayonet. And they shouted. And the men trudged on. In clogs. Their heads bowed. With their arms dangling by their grey coats.” “They came into the registration(barracks). These people looked terrible. They didn't look like people anymore. They were walking skeletons. Skin and bone. Completely emaciated. They could hardly stand on their feet from thinness. At the registration(barracks) mess tins were brought in with porridge to give them something. On seeing the mess tins, these poor people couldn't control themselves. There was food! They flew on it like wild animals.” During the existence of the SS-Schule Avegoor it was visited by many high-ranked SS officials such as Hanns Albin Rauter (head of SD and police in the Netherlands), Anton Mussert (head of the NSB, the Dutch National-Socialist Movement), Heinrich Himmler (head of the German SS) and Arthur Seyss-Inquart (Reichskommisar in the Netherlands). Tinus Osendarp was also a frequent visitor to the sports-fields of Avegoor. He won 2 bronze medals for the Netherlands during the Olympic Games of Berlin 1936, on the sprint of 100 and 200 m. Later on he joined the NSB, the German SS and he worked for the SD arresting people that worked for the Dutch resistance. The SS school left for Hoogeveen. After the liberation, Avegoor became an internment camp (until 1949). After restitution, it was returned to the civil service association (later: AbvaKabo ), which sold it to a hotel chain in 2008. Since 2013 it has been used as a hotel.
