George Hurrell (1904-1992) was an American photographer best known for his iconic portraits of Hollywood stars in the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Covington, Kentucky, he moved to California in the 1920s, where he began his career as a painter. In 1929, Hurrell was hired by MGM Studios to photograph their actors and actresses. He quickly gained a reputation for his glamorous and dramatic style, characterised by dramatic lighting and posed subjects. He became the photographer of choice for many of the biggest stars of the day, including Joan Crawford, Clark Gable and Marlene Dietrich. Hurrell's portraits were used extensively in film posters, advertisements and magazines, helping to define the look of Hollywood during its golden age. He continued to work as a photographer throughout his career and his work has been exhibited in galleries around the world. Today, his photographs are highly sought after by collectors and are considered some of the most iconic images of Hollywood's golden age.
