Summary

Window in the Night

Frits Van den Berghe (1883-1939) was a Belgian painter associated with the Flemish Expressionist movement. He was born in Ghent, Belgium, and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. Van den Berghe's early works were influenced by the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements, but he later developed his own unique style, characterised by exaggerated forms, bright colours and a sense of humour. He often painted scenes from everyday life, including portraits, landscapes and still lifes. In the 1920s, Van den Berghe became associated with the Flemish Expressionist movement, which emphasised emotional expression and rejected traditional academic styles. His most famous work is probably "Het Zotte Geweld" ("The Mad Violence"), a large painting depicting a carnival scene with grotesque figures and bright colours. Van den Berghe died in 1939 at the age of 56, but his work is still celebrated for its unique style and contribution to the Flemish Expressionist movement.
