description

Summary

The Baltimore oriole (Icterus galbula) is a small icterid blackbird, meaning it is a small to medium-sized, often colorful passerine restricted to the New World. Most icterids have black as a predominant plumage color with splashes of a bright yellow, orange or red. Like all New World orioles, the scientific name comes from the unrelated yet physically similar family found in the Old World: the Oriolidae. This species' common name, perhaps more interestingly, stems from the male's rememblance to the colorful coat-of-arms of Lord Baltimore, the first Proprietor and Proprietary Governor of the Province of Maryland (August 1605 - November 1675).
