When Young Walker wassixteen years old his father died. Hismother urged her son to continue atschool, but he would not heed her and asthe railroad had just been completed toWheeling, he heard the call and got ajob as cleaner-up in the yards. Henext was given charge of the companystore, which dispensed matches, tobaccoand other articles of a similar nature. It was at this time that his futurecareer was shaped. He had a friendwho was a telegraph operator and theactive mind of young Walker wanted todelve into the intricacies of this thenlittle-known invention.
