TITUSVILLE, Fla. - Inside the Astrotech payload processing facility near NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the nose faring is being prepared for encapsulation with the Radiation Belt Storm Probes, or RBSP, spacecraft. The payload faring. The fairing will house and protect the RBSP during liftoff and flight through the atmosphere aboard an Atlas V rocket. NASA’s RBSP mission will help us understand the sun’s influence on Earth and near-Earth space by studying the Earth’s radiation belts on various scales of space and time. RBSP will begin its mission of exploration of Earth’s Van Allen radiation belts and the extremes of space weather after its liftoff aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – In high bay 3 of the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, United Space Alliance technicians mark the progress of space shuttle Discovery as it is lowered onto the mobile launcher platform. Discovery will be mated with the solid rocket boosters and external tank already stacked there in preparation for the launch on the upcoming STS-124 mission to the International Space Station. On the mission, the STS-124 crew will transport the Japanese Experiment Module - Pressurized Module and the Japanese Remote Manipulator System to the space station. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – In high bay 4 of the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the newly arrived simulator crew module for the Ares I-X rocket rests on a work stand, surrounded by other segments stacked on the floor. Ares I-X is the test flight for the Ares I. The I-X flight will provide NASA an early opportunity to test and prove hardware, facilities and ground operations associated with Ares I. The launch of the 321-foot-tall, full-scale Ares I-X, targeted for July 2009, will be the first in a series of unpiloted rocket launches from Kennedy. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – In NASA Kennedy Space Center's Space Station Processing Facility, the Cupola module is being mated to the Tranquility node on the work stand. Cupola and Tranquility are the payload for space shuttle Endeavour's STS-130 mission to the International Space Station. The module was built for the European Space Agency by Alenia Spazio in Turin, Italy. When attached to the Tranquility Node 3 module, Cupola will resemble a circular bay window that will provide a vastly improved view of the station's exterior. Just under 10 feet in diameter, the module will accommodate two crew members and portable workstations that can control station and robotic activities. The multi-directional view will allow the crew to monitor spacewalks and docking operations, as well as provide a spectacular view of Earth and other celestial objects.
