aculous, and it is scarcely possible to paint better. ^ Francesco Algarottimakes the following admission : May Raphaels divine genius pardonme, if, when gazing at this picture, I break faith with him, and amtempted to say in secret to Correggio : Thou alone canst pleaseme ! 2 The enthusiasm of past generations, of which we have givensome few samples, is shared by many modern critics. Burckhardt, forinstance, speaks of this picture as a marvel of colour and of execution,a perfect expression of serene and innocent happiness. He praises theexquisite beauty of the Magdalen, and says that the gesture withwhich she prostrates herself before the Infant Saviour is unsurpassedin its suggestion of feminine grace. Another picture, hardly less famous than this, was carried with it to Paris in 1796, and restored to the Royal Gallery of Parma in 1S16. This was the Holy Family, known as the Madonna dclla Scodclla Viti\ iv. )). 114. Bottaii, Ldlcrc artistichc, vii. p. 419. • /(■ Cica-oiic, p. 715.

Pungileoni, relying on a document in the archives ofSan Salvatorc, described it as painted aboii/ 1527-28.^ The paperfurther states : It is said to have been paid for by the offeringsof several contributors. The anonymous chronicler thus advancesas a hypothesis what is stated as a fact in the inscription reproducedabove. He adds that the tradition was borne out by the will ofCristoforo Bondini, who in 1524 bequeathed a sum of fifteen imperial/ire towards the purchase, and concludes with the statement
