An entrance of an underground tunnel from World War

description

Summary

An entrance of an underground tunnel from World War II March 20 on Iwo To, Japan. The tunnels were used by the Japanese Imperial forces during the Battle of Iwo Jima to have an edge on U.S. troops by hiding inside them. There are still remnants of the battle being preserved in these caves today, 71 years after the battle. The tunnels create a maze under the surface of the island, and many of the tunnels are still unexplored due to the danger of cave-ins and unexploded ordnance. (Marine Corps Photo by Cpl. Douglas D.
