Alfred Henry Maurer (1868-1932) was an American modernist painter known for his bold use of color and experimentation with form. Born in New York City, Maurer studied at the National Academy of Design and the Académie Julian in Paris. He was influenced by the work of Cézanne and Matisse, and his early paintings were characterized by loose brushwork and bright colors. In the 1910s, Maurer began to experiment with more abstract forms, creating works that were influenced by Cubism and Futurism. He also began to incorporate elements of collage into his paintings, using scraps of paper and other materials to create texture and depth. Maurer's work was exhibited widely during his lifetime, including at the Armory Show in 1913, which introduced American audiences to modern art. Despite his success, however, Maurer struggled with depression and alcoholism throughout his life. He died by suicide in 1932. Today, his work is held in the collections of major museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Modern Art.
