Alexander Campbell Study, Route 67, 1.3 miles east of intersection with Route 88, Bethany, Brooke County, WV

Significance: Alexander Campbell (1788-1866), was a leader of the Disciples of Christ, America's largest indigenous religious movement, and the founder and first president of Bethany College. His home was built by his father-in-law, John Brown, in 1793. During the 55 years that Campbell lived there, he added to the house several time. In 1832 he built a small separate brick study, of hexagonal form, with gothic details. The study is lit mainly by clerestory windows in the cupola. In 1836 a square addition with a fireplace and triple-hung window was added. In his study Campbell wrote 56 volumes as well as The Millennial Harbringer, a church periodical.
