Albert Marquet (1875-1947) was a French painter known for his Fauvist style, which emphasized bold colors and simplified forms. He was born in Bordeaux and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he met Henri Matisse. The two became close friends and worked together on many projects, including the famous Salon d'Automne exhibition of 1905, which introduced the world to Fauvism. Marquet's work often featured landscapes and seascapes, with a focus on capturing the atmosphere and light of his subjects. He also painted portraits and still lifes, but is best known for his vibrant depictions of the Mediterranean coast and the streets of Paris. In his later years, Marquet became more interested in classical art and spent much of his time studying the works of Poussin and Corot. He died in La Frette-sur-Seine, France in 1947.
